Bill’s Trail:Trailwork Training Day on Saturday, March 15 Samuel P. Taylor Park

Bill’s Trail:
Trailwork Training Day on Saturday,
March 15

Come learn CA State Park’s trail building techniques and Best Management Practices!

Later this year they will begin converting Bill’s Trail at Samuel P. Taylor Park into a shared-use trail with mountain bikes. CSP is taking a trail that once was a foot/hoof path and turning it into a “shared” use trail with mountain bikes. Bill’s Trail has a steep grade, limited sight lines, and hairpin turns. In order to slow mountain bikes down California State Parks will be installing pinch points at the turns and grading the trail to a width of 48 inches.
In preparation for this trailwork change, which should begin in August 2014, Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC) and Marin Horse Council are partnering with California State Parks on a “Trailwork Training Day” on Saturday, Mach 15. This is a opportunity for us to learn how State Parks builds and maintains trails and how they plan and implement change-in-use projects like Bill’s Trail. Are you curious as to the methods they will be using as “Best Management Practices” in reconstructing trails? It will also be an opportunity to see this beautiful trail, meet our State Park Rangers, and learn about the Best Management Practices that will be applied during construction to safeguard the federally protected Coho salmon that spawn in the creek at the base of the trail.

We need to be aware of this type of development as other trails may be converted in the future. The more we know the better prepared we will be about what is in store for the future of State Park trails. We need to work closely with California State Parks. We don’t want what happened at China Camp to happen at Samuel P. Taylor.

Awesome shot of Bill’s Trail
The State Park trail crew will show us the technique they use for removing slough and berm and compacting it back down on the tread surface. We will not be making trails but we may do light brushwork and remove old fence railing. The tools will be supplied, please wear hiking boots and bring your own gloves. Invite your friends and family.
